Ontario Wildfires and Toronto Air Quality: A Practical Guide to Cleaner Indoor Air

Recently, Toronto woke up under an orange sky.

Toronto's air quality ranked worst among all major cities in the world as smoke from northwestern Ontario blanketed the region. The source was hundreds of kilometres north: roughly 190 wildfires burning across the province, having already burned more land than all of last season combined.

Environment Canada's advice was direct: keep windows and doors closed as much as possible.

If you followed that advice, you did the right thing. This guide covers what comes next - what wildfire smoke actually is, what genuinely improves indoor air, and how to decide whether you need equipment at all.

What wildfire smoke actually is

Wildfire smoke's primary health concern is PM2.5 β€” particulate matter under 2.5 micrometres. For scale, that's roughly 1/30th the width of a human hair.

Size matters because it determines behaviour. Particles this small stay suspended in air for long periods, travel enormous distances (which is why fires near Red Lake affect Toronto), and pass through gaps that stop larger dust.

That's why "close your windows" reduces but doesn't eliminate indoor smoke. Homes aren't sealed environments β€” air moves through window frames, door gaps, vents, and exhaust fans.

Understanding Toronto's air quality index during wildfire season

The Air Quality Health Index (AQHI) rates air on a 1–10+ scale. Ontario's readings swung sharply this week β€” conditions moved from "very unhealthy" to "moderate" to "good" within a single morning, while the city's orange-level air quality warning stayed in effect.

That gap matters. The index and the warning are different things. The index reflects current readings; the warning reflects expected conditions. Environment Canada advised that very poor air quality would return in the evening and could persist into the weekend.

Practical takeaway: check the AQHI before outdoor activity rather than judging by how the sky looks. Hazy skies and clean readings can coexist, and so can the reverse.

What Environment Canada advises

During the current warning, the guidance was that during heavy smoke conditions, everyone's health is at risk regardless of age or health status.

Reported symptoms included eye, nose and throat irritation, headaches and mild cough. Less common but more serious symptoms included wheezing, chest pains or severe cough. Anyone experiencing serious symptoms should seek medical attention β€” an air purifier is not a substitute for medical care.

For unavoidable outdoor time, Environment Canada recommends a well-constructed, well-fitting, properly worn respirator such as an N95.

When heat and smoke arrive together

This week combined both. A heat alert was in effect with temperatures near 33Β°C, feeling closer to 36 with humidity, under a heat dome spanning Saskatchewan through Quebec. Environment Canada noted heat and humidity were worsening air quality.

Official guidance was that when an extreme heat event occurs alongside poor air quality, prioritize keeping cool. Heat is the more immediate danger.

This creates a real dilemma: staying cool often means opening windows, which admits smoke. Options that address both include air conditioning set to recirculate, visiting a public cooling centre, and using filtration to clean the air in a closed, cooled room.

What actually reduces indoor smoke β€” free options first

Before buying anything, these help and cost nothing:

  • Keep windows and doors closed during warnings.
  • Set your HVAC or air conditioning toΒ recirculateΒ rather than draw outside air.
  • Avoid adding indoor particulate β€” no candles, incense, frying, or vacuuming without a HEPA vacuum.
  • Upgrade your furnace filter toΒ MERV 13Β if your system supports it. This is inexpensive and meaningfully improves whole-home filtration.
  • Create one "clean room," typically a bedroom, and concentrate your efforts there.

If those steps are enough for your situation, you don't need to buy anything else.

When a portable air purifier makes sense

Filtration becomes worth considering when:

  • Your home has no central HVAC, or can't take a MERV 13 filter.
  • Someone in your household has asthma, COPD, a heart condition, or other respiratory sensitivity.
  • You have young children or elderly family members at home.
  • Smoke events are recurring rather than one-off.
  • You want one room measurably cleaner than the rest of the house.

What a purifier does: a HEPA air purifiers mechanically captures airborne particles, including PM2.5, from air passing through it, reducing particulate concentration in that room.

What it doesn't do: it doesn't seal your home, doesn't clean air it never draws in, doesn't work undersized for the room, and doesn't replace medical care or evacuation guidance.

How to choose one β€” the specs that matter

True HEPA filtration
This is the baseline. True HEPA captures at least 99.97% of particles at 0.3 microns. "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-like" is not the same standard.

Activated carbon
Addresses gases and odour, which HEPA does not.

CADR and room size
These determine whether it works at all. Match the unit'sΒ rated coverage to your actual room. Undersized is the most common mistake.

Filter replacement cost
The ongoing expense people forget. Check price and interval before buying.

Avoid ozone-generating devices.
Health Canada advises against ozone generators marketed as air cleaners; ozone is a lung irritant.

Common questions

Does closing windows fully protect indoor air? It reduces intake substantially but doesn't eliminate it β€” fine particles enter through gaps and vents.

One purifier for a whole house? Generally no. Portable units treat the room they're in. Whole-home coverage needs HVAC filtration or multiple units.

Should it run continuously? During smoke events, continuous operation in occupied rooms is more effective than intermittent use.

Is an air purifier necessary? Not for everyone. If you have central HVAC with a MERV 13 filter and no respiratory sensitivity in your household, that may be sufficient. Purifiers matter most for sensitive individuals, homes without central filtration, and bedrooms.

Ontario's fire season runs for months yet, and Environment Canada indicated smoke may persist. The most useful things you can do are free: keep windows closed during warnings, set HVAC to recirculate, upgrade your furnace filter, and check the AQHI before going out.
